The purpose of our group is to mobilize a well organized, visible group of people to act responsively and proactively on issues that matter most to the vulnerable members of our community .  We want to maintain a long term task force that can act and respond to issues threatening the safety or rights of our community members as needed.

General Discussion

  1. Yes – yard signs make our community feel supported.  We’ll post links.  Please buy them and put them in your windows and on your lawn.  If you need help paying, PM the group and we’ll figure it out.

  5. We will be networking with area Indivisible groups (and others) to coordinate HUGE protests in Janesville on the same day as the big national marches.  The first one we’ll focus on is April 22: Climate March.
    1. I’ll post our events on the Indivisible page too so groups can coordinate and collaborate.

  • Someone will help me find students to translate our website into Spanish and make a sister page

LGBTQ Group:

  • Try to form a community support group
  • Some of us will reach out to law offices by next meeting to find out who will help cheap or pro-bono with people needing legal assistance to protect their families and households in the face of an anti-LGBTQ administration
  • Others will investigate current discrimination city ordinances and look for ways we can improve them
  • People are investigating criteria used to judge whether a business is LGBTQ friendly so we can create a Rock County consumer guide
    • Then we can distribute Pride flag stickers to cooperative businesses
  • We will engage Tammy Baldwin’s office
  • Working on a Pride march for April 29 in coordination with a large peace rally

Thanks for a great night!  See you Tuesday March 7 at 5:30 at Bushel and Peck.  In the meantime, stay focused, stay encouraged, and remember that we are stronger together. ❤

February 7 Meeting Agenda

February 7, 2017 Action Team Meeting Agenda

The purpose of our group is to mobilize a well organized, visible group of people to act responsively and proactively on issues that matter most to the vulnerable members of our community .  We want to maintain a long term task force that can act and respond to issues threatening the safety or rights of our community members as needed.

General Group:

  1. Do we want yard signs?
    1. Existing group or make our own?
  2. What additional resources do we need?
  3. Comments on the website
  4. Call party w/ Andrea Levine

Latino Community Notes:

Chair: Maria Dominguez mdom1977@gmail.com

  1. Drivers Card Updates
  2. Sanctuary City Organizing
    1. Publicize where current sanctuaries exist on our Facebook group and Website
  3. Hold meeting of Latino Issues groups to work together on Drivers Cards and Sanctuary City
  4. Spanish version of Website

LGBTQ Notes:

Chair: (temp) John McMahon  mcmahonja@beloit.edu

Immediate next steps:

  1. Select permanent committee chair
  2. Get in touch with Kelly Wells-Hernandez to hear about what GSA at the high school is doing (Jessica)
  3. Connect with SAGA and possibly SIC at the college (John)
  4. Do some research on state, county, and city laws/ordinances to see if there are any protections for LGBTQ folks (John)

Short-/medium-term goal:

  1. Connect queer students at the high school with queer students at the college in a kind of mentoring program (although perhaps a cooler/less corny term!) with one another

Longer-term possible goals:

  1. Visibility: Beloit is a diverse place, but sexuality is a less obvious/visible form of diversity. Are there events that could change that…marches, rallies, candlelight vigils, etc.? Should we have a Beloit/Rock County Pride next summer?
  2. Police training: Is it possible to build on the work that Paul and Ron are doing with the Beloit PD to also work on police training when it comes to issues of gender and sexuality, especially since queer and trans of color are especially likely to be targeted/oppressed?
  3. Beloit Health System: what kind of training do physicians, nurses, staff receive? Are they able to support LGBTQ (especially T) people in the community? Can talk to college Health and Wellness Clinic as a starting point
  4. Beloit Public Library: visible display of LGBT books/authors/etc? Possibly rotating – LGBT history one month, LGBT novels the next, LGBT graphic novels, etc.
  5. Bullying issues and mental health resources specific for LGBTQ folks

Interfaith Notes:

Latino Community Notes:

Chair: Maria Dominguez mdom1977@gmail.com

We agreed to gather information from leaders of Latino groups, churches, schools, and promote the petition for driver’s cards. We also want to hold a meeting with Latino partners and a group of organizations.  We agreed that we should have a translator for English and Spanish.

Getting Started

Concerned residents in the Beloit, WI area are ready to work with our communities to ensure that everyone in Beloit feels safe, valued, and empowered.  On November 20, 2016 approximately 150 people gathered together at Horace White Park and walked to Pearson’s Hall to unite around voices in our community advocating for peace and action.

Beloit Daily News Article

After our first organizing meeting on December 6 we broke into teams and we plan to meet monthly to organize locally to reach out to representatives, host local events, and continue to move forward against hate to create a sustainable culture of acceptance and respect in our community.

Please join us. Many small actions come together to create great momentum for change.

Follow us here and on Facebook.

Peace!
